Meet the makers
Toyo began in Osaka in 1969 with a simple manufacturing idea: form a useful steel box from a single sheet. The company’s pressed-steel construction gives an ordinary storage object a distinctive clarity.
That care matters just as much on a small scale. A few drawing supplies, a collection of keepsakes, the loose ends of a working day. There is quiet pleasure in giving them somewhere to belong.
Stefan Vincent grew up with the barber tools passed down by his grandfather and great-uncle. In 2013, that interest became small batches of shaving goods, first made as gifts and then requested by other wet-shaving enthusiasts.
His brother Matt joined the work, and The Holy Black grew into a New York grooming business. Its character still comes from that personal beginning: a liking for familiar rituals and a desire to make them its own.
Takenaka’s story begins in the Yamanaka Onsen district of Kaga in 1925, among the region’s lacquerware traditions. Color and care have long been part of how the company approaches the everyday meal.
That point of view travels easily into lunch packed for work or a day out. A pleasing shape and a color you love can make a simple routine feel a little more personal.
