BeaverCraft began in Kyiv in 2014 with an interest in making woodcarving more approachable. The company develops tools for people taking their first cut as well as those who have worked with wood for years.

That invitation to make is what connects the workshop to the campsite. Learn the feel of the grain. Take your time. Enjoy the useful satisfaction of having done something with your hands.

The first thing

The Kelly family traces its kettle back to Patrick Kelly’s experiments beside Lough Conn in the 1890s. A way to make a hot drink while fishing became a familiar sight along the lakeshore.

The business passed through the family, and the ritual traveled with it: gather a little dry tinder, put the water on, make enough for whoever arrives. Some outdoor traditions are really traditions of welcome.

A search for one axe.
A reason to start again.

In 2015, Steve Ferguson wanted a good American-made axe for his godson, who was heading to forestry school. That search brought Steve, his brother Mark, and Barry Worthing to a larger idea: help revive axe making in Maine.

Their South Portland shop hand-forges axes rooted in the state’s traditional patterns. Making is only part of the work; they also teach care and use, keeping the knowledge close to the tool.
