We chose this little wooden car because it invites exactly that kind of companionship—sturdy enough for long trips across the rug, simple enough that the child decides what happens next, and built to last through years of important missions. Fagus has been making wooden toys in Germany since 1982, employing about 135 people with disabilities who craft each piece by hand. The wood comes from sustainable German forests, and the whole operation—from design to production to repair service—centers on durability, safety, and the idea that a toy worth making is a toy worth keeping. This car has no batteries, no lights, no agenda. It just rolls, and waits, and goes wherever it's needed.

It will ride in a jacket pocket to the park, sit on the windowsill during lunch, and be present for at least one extremely serious conversation about whether cars can be friends with trucks. The answer, for the record, is yes.
