Children give jobs to the smallest things. A wooden peg becomes the captain. Another one guards the collection. A third stands watch over the blanket fort negotiations and does not leave until everyone agrees on the rules.

We chose these three wooden figures because they turn a handful of blocks into a whole neighborhood. No painted faces means they can be anyone. No accessories means a twig becomes a sword, a bottle cap becomes a hat, and a dry leaf becomes an extremely important letter that must be delivered immediately.

They're small enough to fit in a pocket. Smooth enough that they won't snag. Solid enough that they'll still be here when your children's children need someone to stand on the castle wall and keep watch.

One will end up in charge of the marble collection. Another will be assigned to the expedition across the living room rug, which is actually the ocean, which is actually lava, depending on who you ask. The third will stand by the window and wait for important news that may or may not arrive by pigeon.
