A set of 26 wooden blocks with the English alphabet from A to Z, each one a 4cm cube with rounded edges. Every block shows four engraved sides: an illustration, an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, and a matching word, with two plain sides top and bottom. Made from linden or birch by SABO concept, a husband-and-wife outfit in Ukraine—Elena designs, Dmitriy handles the wood crafting. They skip plastic entirely, using non-toxic water-based paint instead, because their main customers are children and that matters. The blocks come in a linen bag and weigh just over a kilo. Certified safe for ages three and up.

Twenty-six blocks means twenty-six opportunities for someone to spell their name, then immediately abandon literacy in favor of building a castle where the letter Q is load-bearing and M is the roof. By hour two the alphabet is a cityscape and the word "cat" is now a firetruck. You'll find a C under the couch in March.
