Children move things—rocks, sticks, important leaves, sometimes just air in a bucket—because getting something from here to there is half the game. We chose this ride-on dump truck because it turns the driveway into a hauling route, because it has a tipping dump bed that actually dumps, and because Moover Toys built it from FSC-certified birch plywood with a quiet ride that won't drive anyone to the brink. Danish designer Kåre Tofte gave it hidden storage under the seat for treasures too valuable to dump, and rubber TPE tires that roll smooth on sidewalks and kitchen floors alike. The finish is non-toxic, the 18mm plywood wheels are sturdy, and the whole thing is made to last long enough to get handed down when the first driver outgrows it. It takes up 22 inches front to back, fits riders 18 months and up, and requires assembly, which means you get to put it together while someone watches and offers extremely specific commentary about which wheel goes where.

The first load will be gravel from the driveway, transported six feet and dumped with ceremony. The second will be a single acorn that rode along because it looked lonely. By next Tuesday the truck will have a route, a schedule, and a reputation for dependable service between the sandbox and the back step.
