Time becomes interesting when you can see it moving—the long hand creeping forward, the short one trailing behind, both of them proving that yes, something is happening even when it feels like recess will never arrive. We chose this watch because it turns waiting into watching, and watching into the first glimpse of how minutes actually work. Made in Italy with a Miyota Quartz movement from Japan, the dial marks hours and minutes with different-colored hands so the two stories stay clear. The transparent case shows the gears doing their job. The NATO strap is nylon with a steel buckle, machine washable when it comes home dusted or puddled. Mineral glass crystal covers the face. Water-resistant to 3 atm, meaning rain and splashes are fine, submersion is not. Fits wrists up to 18cm, which covers most kids from about four years old through early adulthood. The first few days someone will check it often, mostly to confirm that time is still happening and that they now know what it's doing.

The first question will be whether the long hand or the short hand is in charge. The second will be how long until we get there. The answer, checked and rechecked, will involve staring at the dial with the kind of focus usually reserved for snow globe shaking.
