Found My Animal started in 2006 when two rescue chihuahuas — both named Walter — crossed paths in Brooklyn. Their owners, Bethany Obrecht and Anna Conway, became friends and started making leashes out of marine-grade rope, brass, and waxed canvas, inspired by a fisherman in the family. Each leash is hand-spliced with 3-strand rope and whipped ends, built to last through daily walks and rainy days. The solid brass carabiner and adjustable design let you carry it hands-free around your waist, use it as a traditional handle, adjust the length, or walk two dogs at once. Every leash comes with a numbered brass tag that reads 'FOUND' to promote animal adoption. More than 117,000 of these leashes have been sold, and part of the proceeds supports animal welfare and rescue organizations. The rope develops its own patina over time.
Two chihuahuas named Walter meeting on a sidewalk and spawning a business empire is the kind of origin story that makes you wonder what your own dog has been holding back. Somewhere in Brooklyn, those Walters are still out there, blissfully unaware they're legends.
