A bicycle means the block gets bigger. The park at the end of the street becomes reachable. The hill you've only ever walked becomes something you might try to ride down, just once, to see what happens.

We chose this bicycle because it turns a driveway into a destination and gives children the particular confidence that comes from pedaling somewhere under their own power. Banwood—founded by Juan Manuel Torralvo Castro and Frida Jonsby, a couple who met in Germany and discovered that her eye for design and his family's manufacturing history made a good match—builds bicycles with mid-century lines and Scandinavian restraint. This one has a lightweight alloy frame, a rattan basket up front for carrying treasures, training wheels that come off when the rider's ready, and a back-pedal brake that works the way a child expects it to work. The saddle adjusts from 46cm to 57cm as legs get longer. Suggested for ages 4 to 7, which is to say: the years when a bicycle stops being a toy and starts being transportation.
